Monday Mural – Sheffield, Tasmania

Some wonderful murals from the Town of Sheffield, Tasmania. The mural capital of Australia.

Any Vacancies – Julian Bale
Spirited Horses – John Landis

In 1919 a severe electrical storm struck while men were working on the Cradle Mountain road. A bolt of lightning hit a nearby tree causing the horses to take fright and throw their riders, breaking the back of Ross Connell who died six weeks later in hospital.

The mural shows the mountains in the park, as well as the often extreme weather conditions. Source: Sheffield Visitor Information.

Monday Mural – Escape Artist

This amazing mural is located in Fremantle and was painted by Fintan Magee. It is dedicated to six Irish prisoners who escaped from a British penal colony in Western Australia in 1876. There are six flying wild geese in this painting and they depict thousands of Irish Men who fought other people’s wars. Source: Fremantle Shipping News, you can read more about the Fenians here.

I saw this mural yesterday afternoon while walking around Fremantle with my hubby, and stood there for ages just looking.

Monday Murals : Mount Lawley, WA

Only recently have I discovered so much street art work around Perth. Melbourne doesn’t have the monopoly anymore after I visited Mount Lawley, a suburb north of Perth. I downloaded an urban street art map and found all sorts of wonderful works up side streets and down alleys.

Seinfeld and his cronies

Who can you spot? Jerry, Elaine, Kramer, George, Jerry White and the Soup Nazi!

The above mural was painted by Paul Deej on the wall behind the IGA Supermarket.

I could just about make out the picture on this. James Dean? I cannot seem to find any info about this picture.

Painting of a fish by Amok Island, a Dutch artist now living in Perth
A Mel McVee painting

This last one is my favourite, so colourful and with so much detail. By Pablito – Something about Jazz

I’m not one for going into art museums but there’s something about street art that really grabs my attention. I will be following the Perth Street Art Map around the suburbs from now on.
