~ A Town Mouse or a Country Mouse, which one are you? ~

This is the question posed by Tina from Travels and Trifles this week. We are all familiar with the famous story by Aesop from our childhood. The moral of the story is “living a simple and happy life is better than living an extravagant life with constant fear.

Of course we all want a happy life, not so sure about simple. I love living near a city, but not in one, just near enough to get an exciting vibe whenever I feel the need. On the otherhand, I do like the peace and quiet of the Perth suburbs.

Having lived and worked in London and also Hong Kong, I enjoyed the hustle and bustle of city life. We lived in the countryside in Hong Kong, an anomaly right there, but it wasn’t too far to drive into the city.

I love a city break for two or three nights, see the sights and visit fancy restaurants. Coming home to my serene suburban life is always welcome at the end.

  1. I never think of Hong Kong as having countryside! I love the buzz of a city but like you am probably happiest in a suburb or perhaps a small city.

  2. Right there with you. Cities are not my preferred spaces, though it’s nice to have easy access to some of their amenities when needed.

That apartment building from Hong Kong seems to be playing tricks on my eyes, it’s a very strange (and asymmetrical) design.

  3. Cities are great for entertainment and the arts but I don’t like being surrounded by people who’re rushing everywhere, Ali, so a couple of days are usually enough. Hong Kong does look very green and would be interesting for a longer break, I would think xx

    1. Thanks Jo. Hong Kong is a place that’s often overlooked, most people prefer Singapore or Tokyo. Hong Kong has so much to offer though.

  4. I agree wholeheartedly Ali. We love our visits to NYC but are always happy to return to the quiet of Kiawah. Your images are beautiful. We loved our visit to HK but must admit I don’t remember seeing much of the countryside! And I doubt very much we saw that “wonky” building!!

    1. Thanks Tina, most people have two or three days in HK so only see the busyness. HK is so much more though. I wonder if it feels wonky inside that building 😂

  5. I agree, Ali. It is so nice to have a romp through the cities and enjoy restaurants and goings on. I think the cities also offer more people watching fun. But yes, there is no where like home.

  6. Alison, you’ve shared some wonderful photos for the challenge. I love to see big cities, and even stay for a short time, but I always love returning to our smaller city with just enough amenities to make me think I’m living large in the city! >grin<

  7. Great comparisons – and I too didn’t think of Hongkong as having green areas like that. Looks an interesting city. Of course I agree too – home is best!
