This is the question posed by Tina from Travels and Trifles this week. We are all familiar with the famous story by Aesop from our childhood. The moral of the story is “living a simple and happy life is better than living an extravagant life with constant fear“.
Of course we all want a happy life, not so sure about simple. I love living near a city, but not in one, just near enough to get an exciting vibe whenever I feel the need. On the otherhand, I do like the peace and quiet of the Perth suburbs.
Having lived and worked in London and also Hong Kong, I enjoyed the hustle and bustle of city life. We lived in the countryside in Hong Kong, an anomaly right there, but it wasn’t too far to drive into the city.

Hong Kong Countryside

Perth – Countryside and City

I love a city break for two or three nights, see the sights and visit fancy restaurants. Coming home to my serene suburban life is always welcome at the end.

I’m an urban creature through and through
I probably am too at heart
I never think of Hong Kong as having countryside! I love the buzz of a city but like you am probably happiest in a suburb or perhaps a small city.
So many people don’t realise how green and hilly Hong Kong is.
Thanks for your comments Sarah 😊
Right there with you. Cities are not my preferred spaces, though it’s nice to have easy access to some of their amenities when needed.
That apartment building from Hong Kong seems to be playing tricks on my eyes, it’s a very strange (and asymmetrical) design.
Thanks for your comments Diana
That building does look very rickety
Cities are great for entertainment and the arts but I don’t like being surrounded by people who’re rushing everywhere, Ali, so a couple of days are usually enough. Hong Kong does look very green and would be interesting for a longer break, I would think xx
Thanks Jo. Hong Kong is a place that’s often overlooked, most people prefer Singapore or Tokyo. Hong Kong has so much to offer though.
What a wonderful post! I loved these photo comparisons.
Thanks so much Edigio
I agree wholeheartedly Ali. We love our visits to NYC but are always happy to return to the quiet of Kiawah. Your images are beautiful. We loved our visit to HK but must admit I don’t remember seeing much of the countryside! And I doubt very much we saw that “wonky” building!!
Thanks Tina, most people have two or three days in HK so only see the busyness. HK is so much more though. I wonder if it feels wonky inside that building 😂
I agree, Ali. It is so nice to have a romp through the cities and enjoy restaurants and goings on. I think the cities also offer more people watching fun. But yes, there is no where like home.
Thanks Donna 😊 it all does depend on which city though!
Great photos. I love the city… as seen from the country.
Thanks John, makes it feel a little less isolated
I am in agreement with many of the previous posts, home sweet home is the best
We are lucky to love the place where we live 😍
I also agree with you, Ali. Home is always best, slowing down and enjoying the suburban life.
We all love a mixture of both I think! Lovely photos Ali.
Exactly Teresa, a nice balance
Alison, you’ve shared some wonderful photos for the challenge. I love to see big cities, and even stay for a short time, but I always love returning to our smaller city with just enough amenities to make me think I’m living large in the city! >grin<
Thanks John. You’ve phrased that exactly right!
Great comparisons – and I too didn’t think of Hongkong as having green areas like that. Looks an interesting city. Of course I agree too – home is best!
Thanks Leya, I lived there for 14 years and it was the best time
Beautiful pictures of both 🙂
Thanks Meg 😊
I could have written this Alison, well except for the part about Hong Kong, I’ve never been there. I loved the photos of it. Great post.
Thanks so much Leanne. You would love HK because of the amazing architecture
